if you’re a “progressive” member of the AAPI community but you only stand up for AAPI rights, then you are not in it for the rights of the collective people. we have capitalized off of the traumas and systematic oppressions of black folks for generations, and ignoring that is only supporting the systems that continue to oppress and target black lives. black lives are human lives. we aren’t free until we’re all free.
yes!! even though we’re the “model minority”, we need to engage in a more collective mindset and embrace black people alongside us rather than discriminating. thank you so much for making this point, personally I find it very important and frustrating that many members of the AAPI community consciously continue to target black lives like they are so different from ours.
additionally, we have to acknowledge how oppressive the model minority myth is itself. early immigration laws in america only permitted the most educated asians to enter the united states, creating the idea that all asians are basically guaranteed to succeed (aka the “model minority” myth)
this idea is not only harmful to AAPI folks, because obviously we are not guaranteed success economically, politically, or socially. it totally erases the racism our community faces. however, this myth is also harmful for the black community; it’s an idea created by white supremacy in order to use asian bodies as a vehicle to further oppress black lives systematically, politically, and socially. it only encourages asian-on-black racism. this is just one example of how our systems work to manipulate non-black people of color and continue the systems that oppress and hurt black folks every day!
